Lake Powell
Lake Powell is a reservoir on the Colorado River and is part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Though most of Lake Powell is in Utah and a very small portion of it is in Arizona, but the major marina is in Page, Arizona.
The Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Visitor Center is also in Page, AZ. As such, most of the tourists who tour Lake Powell take the boat from Wahweap Marina in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area at Page. Even without taking the boat, experiencing Lake Powell from the shores of Wahweap is already a beautiful experience. However, we decided to take the boat for one reason: the Rainbow Bridge National Monument. The Rainbow Bridge Cruise lasted 5 hours, 4 hours on water and one hour on land. We traveled 25 miles on water, and it was cool to experience all these orange towering mesas and buttes around us that were surrounded by water. Though it took us 2 hours to reach our destination but it was never boring because of the sights. It felt like we were exploring Canyonlands National Park, only that we were in water.
This is a small canyon passageway our boat
As our boat meandered on narrows canyons, it felt like hiking in The Narrows of Zion National Park, only that, we were not really hiking, but we were on boat. It was thrilling to experience the boat moved in between two giant walls of the canyon in a narrow opening. I heard a lot of "ohhs" and "ahhs" from kids who were so excited to explore and learn about their natural world. The future scientists probably? After 2 hours on water, we finally docked. The destination of our easy hike: Rainbow Bridge National Monument.
More about Rainbow Bridge National Monument in my next post.

ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteRecently I came across some great articles on your site. The other day, I was discussing (http://www.thejoysofsimplelife.com/2012/04/lake-powell-boat-tour.html ) with my colleagues and they suggested I submit an article of my own. Your site is just perfect for what I have written! Would it be ok to submit the article? It is free of charge, of course!
